Is the new Toyota HiLux about to be revealed? 2024 Toyota Tacoma teased in USA as debut approaches for the ute's cousin

Based on Tacoma leaks so far, we expect the next HiLux to share design similarities. (Image credit: Thanos Pappas)

The Toyota Tacoma, American cousin to the HiLux currently being developed on the same platform, has been leaked in the US with shadowy images coming from Toyota hinting at an imminent announcement.

Whether it's the reveal of the Tacoma or not, it means the global reveal of the 2024 Toyota HiLux is getting closer. We're currently expecting to see it at some point next year, though the Tacoma will be a very good indication of what to expect.

In the images, seen below, the front of the Tacoma is shown in low light with the 'Toyota' badge visible in black trim.

The shadowy images line up with the style we've seen in the past, as per leaked design renders from Brazil in January, which became the basis of the render seen at the top of this page.

While the Tacoma and HiLux are different models, they're expected to share Toyota's TNGA-F architecture as a platform, while the HiLux is tipped to take on a design more closely influenced by the Tacoma's US styling.

The Toyota is likely to go electric, and could well take on a hybrid engine like the Toyota Hybrid MAX, a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with twin electric motors that's found in the new Grand Highlander in America, making 266kW and 542Nm.

While the popularity of diesel dual-cabs in Australia means it's unlikely Toyota - famously an 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' brand - will abandon the fuel source any time soon, the whole world's automotive industry will get there eventually, and the world's biggest car brand will need to adopt.

The leaked shadowy images found on tacoma4g.com are accompanied by somewhat unhelpful commentary from the user who posted it: "Toyota sent info to select media with an odd embargo time stamp of 5:10am EST. Could this odd time reference be a hint? Perhaps 510 refers to 510 Nm..."

Expect to see any tech updates that make it into the new Tacoma, including a rumoured large 14-inch touchscreen, come to Australia in any relatively high-spec HiLuxes.

We've tipped to see the new HiLux launch in Australia in 2025.
