Powered up! 2023 MG4 electric car price confirmed, undercuts Nissan Leaf and BYD Atto 3

The MG4 is the first model from the brand to use its new Modular Scalable Platform to be used for future electric cars.

The second fully electric car from MG, the MG4, has become one of the most awaited models for the brand in Australia, and now pricing for the EV hatch has been confirmed.

Undercutting rivals like the Nissan Leaf, and BYD Atto 3, the 2024 MG4 comes in with a launch price of $47,990 before on-road costs for the initial variant, the MG4 Essence.

Its price undercuts the Nissan Leaf by $3000, the Nissan comes in at $50,990, while the BYD Atto 3 is just $21 more than the MG4 at $48,011. The GWM Ora has it beat, however, as a competitive $44,490 drive-away.

The MG4 is the first from MG to be built on the brand's new Modular Scalable Platform, which will underpin electric models from other segments in the future.

It uses a 64kWh battery pack and a (rear-wheel drive) 150kW single motor, with a range of up to 435km tested under WLTP criteria.

We also expect to see a 51kWh variant of the MG4 launch , with a shorter range around 350km, while a longer-range version of the bigger-sized battery variant is also coming.

In terms of charging, the MG4 is claimed to be capable of charging up to a max rate of 135kW, good for a charge time of one hour from empty to 80 per cent.

MG claims a 50:50 front-rear weight distribution for the MG4, as well as a low centre of gravity thanks to its battery pack for 'superb road-handling and engagement'.

The brand's MG Pilot advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), plus auto LED headlights, rear parking sensors, surround-view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, wireless phone charging, and connectivity via the MG iSmart app are all features of the Essence, with a two-tone roof and 'twin aero' spoiler for more flair.

Compared to rivals, the MG's 150kW is on par with the BYD Atto 3, and outguns the Leaf's 110kW and the GWM Ora's 126kW. Its range also tops the Ora's 420km, the Atto 3's 410km, and the Leaf's 270km by far.

Order books for the MG4 open on Tuesday April 11, with more announcements regarding other specifications expected to come later.
