The 86 turns ten...ish! 2023 Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary Edition confirmed for extremely limited run in Australia

The Solar Orange paint finish references the first Toyota 86 shown to the world in 2011.

It’s been a little more than a decade since the Toyota 86 landed in Australia to herald a return to ‘fun’ cars for the brand, and things have only escalated since then.

To celebrate (roughly) ten years since the Toyota 86 launched in Australia, the brand’s local arm has confirmed a limited run of the second-generation car will be available with some nods to its predecessor.

The 2023 Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary Edition will be priced from $46,700 before on-roads and is limited to just 86 units, on sale now.

It’s $1310 more expensive than the GTS variant it’s based on in terms of features, but adds a Solar Orange colour scheme to pay homage to the 86 revealed in 2011.

Obviously, the exterior paint is the main element of the theme, but contrast stitching on the steering wheel, handbrake, gear shift, and seats alongside orange stripes in the synthetic Ultrasuede all continue the colour inside the car.

A 10th anniversary stitched badge appears on the door trim, while silver trim in the cabin is swapped for black “for a stealthier look”.

No changes have been made to the GR86's 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-four engine, which it shares with the Subaru BRZ making 174kW and 250Nm.

The GR86 10th Anniversary Edition channels the spirit of the original 86. The GR86 10th Anniversary Edition channels the spirit of the original 86.

While the Toyota ‘86’ name is actually about 40 years old when considering the AE86 introduced in 1983, it’s far more widely used in reference to the modern 86 and GR86 here - Toyota Australia has sold tens of thousands of 86s in the last decade, though sales in recent years have been slim comparatively.

Toyota Australia Vice President of Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley says the special edition harks back to the buzz the model created at its introduction in the early 2010s.

"When it launched in 2012, the first-generation 86 struck a chord with those looking for an affordable sports car representing great value with Toyota reliability," Mr Hanley said.

"This new 10th Anniversary Edition channels the spirit of the original 86 while introducing a range of unique design touches, along with all upgrades that the GR86 delivered when we launched it last year."
